Arr, me hearties! There was real treasure to be found in Goodworth Clatford on Bank Holiday Monday.
The annual village flower show had a pirate theme for the children's section and Capt'n Red Beard, alias Bob Dodd, wasted no time in taking the Mayor of Test Valley hostage as she arrived to watch the start the pirate boat race at the Sheepwash.
The race was won by a splendid craft designed and made by Katie Struthers, aged 13.
"That was all good fun," said Cllr Pam Mutton, who was accompanied by her husband Dennis. Turning her attention to the village fete she soon discovered many other surprises.
"We really didn't know there was so much here," she said. "It's a well kept secret."
The fete was a huge success with hundreds of visitors drawn by the summer sunshine, numerous stalls and tempting smells of the hog roast.
"It's been a fabulous day - great to see so many families and friends here having a good time," said fete organiser Jane Drew. "We are so grateful to everyone for supporting all the good causes and to all the helpers who make a day like this possible."
Gilly Roberts, Cow Down Lane, reigned supreme in the flower show taking three trophies for scoring the most points with her fantastic flowers, fruit, vegetables and culinary skills.

For the fourth year running the Tuckers, Church Lane, went home with the Queen Anne Cottage Platter for winning the most points as a family. Holly Tucker also retained the Hewson and Manisier Cup for children aged nine to 11.
The domestic section was again hotly contested and won by Mike Russell, Village Street, whose culinary expertise also gained him the Chef's prize for the highest points won by a male exhibitor.
POSTMAN GETS RESIDENTS VOTES
VILLAGE postman Dave Painter has been awarded Goodworth Clatford's Queen's Golden Jubilee Cup.
The cup, which was donated to the village by Max Barnikel, is presented annually by the parish council to the person who villagers believe has contributed most to the life and well being of the village throughout the year.
Dave received his award from parish council chairman Alan Lloyd Davies and was congratulated by vice chairman Jenny Rundle.
"It was a big surprise when I heard the news from Jane Storer at the village Post Office," said Dave 'The Post', who has been delivering the post around much of Goodworth Clatford for 13 years.
"I'm just doing my job really, I look forward to coming here every day."
One of the residents who voted for him commented: "He's a jolly good chap, and I'm delighted he's won it. It is well deserved. He's terribly kind and will do anything for me like removing a spider, opening jars and will even feed the birds if I can't."
